Diving in Bonaire

Diving in Bonaire should be the absolute number one item on your must-do list. The spectacular underwater paradise is situated for the most part around the national marine park. Research revealed that an incredible 50% of all visitors to the island of Bonaire actually come here to dive. The island is home to spectacular coral reefs with a large diversity of fish.

Although hurricanes are frequent occurrences in the Carribean, Bonaire has always been safe from this force of nature. As a result, the coral reefs remain fully intact, undamaged by hurricanes. The water is extremely transparent and on a good day you can easily see as far as 75 metres!

Luckily Bonaire does not suffer from so-called bleaching: when coral bleaches as a result of the continued warming of the oceans. Eventually the coral will die away as a result of the warming and bleaching. However, Bonaire is luckily not experiencing any of this yet!

There are a few top dive spots in Bonaire, but you could actually dive anywhere. This is unique compared to other dive destinations where one can mostly only dive in a few specific locations.

This immense popularity amongst divers has resulted in Bonaire establishing its own special ‘fill stations’ for divers. Here one can easily refill your diving cylinder, so you will be ready to brave the waters of Bonaire.

Diving without gloves

One of the rules of Bonaire is that divers are not allowed to wear gloves while diving. It sounds odd, but there is a logical reason for this. To keep the underwater paradise intact, they want to prevent divers from touching and thereby damaging the coral.
